Chemical clearances and unknown substances

A chemical clearance is the full removal of chemical stock from a site, usually on closure, relocation, refurbishment or after a change of ownership. It is the work most carriers decline, because the material is often old, poorly labelled or entirely unidentified.

We attend site, identify and segregate what is there, classify each stream to its waste code, pack it to transport standard and remove it in one managed operation. Where a substance cannot be identified from its label or paperwork, our chemist assesses it on site and assigns the correct disposal route. You receive a full inventory of what was removed, along with the consignment notes and final disposal certificates. Clearances are quoted per project after a free site visit.

Laboratory and industrial chemical waste

Laboratories, universities, research facilities and manufacturers produce chemical waste in small quantities across a very wide range of substances, which is harder to dispose of than bulk waste rather than easier. We provide small-pack collection, lab pack consolidation, fume cupboard and store clear-outs, and scheduled collections for sites producing waste continuously. For manufacturing and process industry we handle bulk liquids, tank and interceptor residues, and contaminated process materials.

Compliance, COSHH and documentation

Chemical waste is almost always hazardous waste in law, so the duty of care sits with the business that produced it until it reaches a permitted facility. In practice you need to classify correctly, store safely and segregated, use a registered carrier, complete a consignment note for every hazardous movement and keep records for three years. Storage also falls under COSHH, which means assessing the substances you hold, keeping incompatible materials apart and controlling exposure. We are an Environment Agency registered carrier, every load is tracked to a permitted site, and recovery is prioritised over disposal wherever the material allows.

What is classed as chemical waste?

Chemical waste is any surplus, expired or contaminated chemical substance a business needs to dispose of, including solvents, acids and alkalis, laboratory reagents, paints and resins, oxidisers, pesticides and process fluids. Almost all of it is classified as hazardous waste in law, which means it needs a registered carrier and a consignment note. If a container carries a hazard pictogram, treat its contents as chemical waste.

Do you collect unlabelled or unknown chemicals?

Yes, and it is one of the things we are asked for most. Our chemist assesses unidentified substances on site, classifies them to the correct waste code and assigns a disposal route. You do not need to know what you have before calling us, which is usually the reason a clearance has been put off.

How much does chemical waste disposal cost?

Cost is driven by the substance rather than the volume, so a single drum of an identified, correctly packaged waste stream typically starts in the low hundreds of pounds including transport and documentation, while a laboratory or site clearance is priced per project after a visit. The variables are classification, whether the material is identified, packaging, volume, distance to a permitted facility and urgency.

Can you clear an entire laboratory or site?

Yes. We handle full chemical clearances on closure, relocation or refurbishment, including identification, segregation, packing and removal in one managed operation. You receive a complete inventory of what was removed alongside the disposal documentation. Site visits for clearance quotes are free.

What paperwork do I get after a collection?

A consignment note raised at the point of loading, waste transfer documentation, and the final disposal or recovery certificate once the material reaches the permitted facility. We keep a copy of everything on your account for the three years the law requires, and can reissue it if the Environment Agency asks you to evidence a disposal.

How should chemical waste be stored before collection?

In sealed, compatible containers, segregated by waste stream, under cover and on a bunded or impermeable surface, with each container labelled. Acids and alkalis must not be stored together, and oxidisers must be kept away from flammables. Storage also falls under COSHH, so the substances you hold should be covered by your assessment. We supply compliant containers if you need them.

How quickly can you collect chemical waste?

Most routine collections are booked within five working days, and within one to two on the Wirral, Liverpool and Merseyside. Same-day and out-of-hours response is available for spills and emergencies. Clearances are scheduled around your site, usually within two weeks of the survey.

Do you cover Manchester and Liverpool?

Yes, both are core service areas. Manchester and Greater Manchester collections are typically made within two to three working days, Liverpool and Merseyside within one to two. We are based in Heswall on the Wirral and cover the whole North West as standard, with nationwide coverage on larger clearance projects.
